Keywords: what are they and when and where are they used in your website?

Keywords, which can also be key 'phrases' upto 11 words long - are used in multiple places and mostly get spoken about by those that are talking to you about SEO (search engine optimization).

Keywords are generally defined as the words and phrases that people enter into search engines when they are looking to find something.

For example, Signpost Media is a Web Design Company in Derbyshire. If you were searching for us on Google, Bing or on Ai platforms, you may be looking for an individual or business that offers the same or similar services to what we offer. So, you would open up Google or your preferred method of searching for recommendations and potentially type something similar to one the following:

Website Designer Derbyshire

Web Designer in Nottinghamshire

Web Designer near me

Web Design help for small business owners

Web Design company in Nottingham

Local Website Designer

Best Web Designer Nottingham

Website and SEO support Derby

As you will see, keywords don't always have to be just one word, they can be called short or long tail keywords which gives you more chance to find your niche audience. If you use just one word, or a short tail keyword, you have to be aware that this might not reach the best audience for your business. So, 'top restaurant' would be too vague a term to use, as it is doesn't cover which area, which style of food, etc. Whereas 'best family friendly vegan restaurant near me' is much more precise, meaning you won't waste customer's time (or your clicks on your Google Adwods campaign!)

So how does this work when you are building your website or trying to promote your Website to customers?

When you build the Website, you should choose relevant keywords and build these into the content of your Website and within the page titles and page descriptions of your site. Plus, these keywords should make up the basis of your Google Adwords Campaign. These keywords should also be used in your Social Media Marketing, especially now that platforms such as Instagram allow you to add alt. text to your images - which is an important aspect of your website SEO work too.

Hopefully this blog has simplified the idea of SEO keywords for those who needed a basic understanding of them. If you'd like to learn more about Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) you can read our previous blogs about SEO here.
