SEO Tips for 2019

Here at Signpost Media we thought we'd start off 2019 with some Digital Marketing Tips to help you with your SEO (search engine optimization). So, in no particular order, below are some simple steps you can take to make sure that your Website ranking is improved in 2019, which will help get you on page one of search engines like Google, or at least help to keep you there.

Mobile-first optimization In March 2018 Google launched their mobile-first index, and after this it was a mobile speed update. This means that the mobile version of your site will be checked by the bots first, then the desktop version when deciding how to rank your site. They will also factor in how quickly your website loads when deciding on it's ranking. So, make sure that you have a mobile optimized version of your site, which loads as quickly as possible.

Update your security and make sure you have an SSL

The July 2018 Google security update meant that sites which begin with HTTP now show an exclamation mark and sometimes show a warning "This site is not secure" in the URL toolbar. An HTTP site is less secure than one that has an SSL installed and is warning people of this. Google also ranks sites that are HTTP less favourably. So, all the work you are doing on SEO may be affected by this one simple thing. Plus, it doesn't look very good if site users are presented with a warning telling them your site may be insecure and that sensitive information such as payment information should not be provided. Especially if you have an ecommerce site. We had a conversation with someone about this just last week and they felt that it didn't matter as it was secure once they used the payment gateway. It may be secure at this point but that won't change the warnings before and it won't help with the SEO.

Expertise – Authoritativeness – Trustworthiness

This is all about providing fresh up to date authoritative content on your Blog. If you aren't blogging on your website, then we suggest you get started as soon as possible. Google is looking for content that shows that you are the expert in your particular field. When someone types in a search query, Google wants to direct them to the expert and to the trusted source of this. So make sure that you are writing about whatever it is you are the expert in. Having some content on the subject that has been on your website for the last 10 years is not the same as being the most up to date authority on what is happening right now in the market place. Keep up to date and show others what you know. Be concice, don't stuff the Blog with keywords, write as if you are taking to someone in a conversation about the subject and they don't know anything about it.

Clearly this isn't everything that you can do to help with SEO in 2019, but these 3 things are important, you'd be surprised how many people are not doing any of them. You'd also be surprised at how simple and easy these 3 things are to implement.
